Headplates are also called as Peghead. The main function of headplate is to house the pegs and hold the string at the head of the instrument. HeadPlates are placed by the headboards or machine heads. Machine heads are commonly used to tune the instrument by adjusting the tension of the strings. HeadPlates are similar to fingerboards in terms of their functioning. In most of the cases headplates and fingerboards are made from the same material with high-density woods.
Most of the luthiers use headboard area to place an aesthetic headplate that adds beauty and unique touch to the guitar neck. According to the preferences of guitarists, holes on the headplates have different measurements. But, they always allot enough space to the chords to be perfectly tense.

Indian Rosewood Headplates
Indian Rosewood is the most popular material for guitar headplates. It has been used by most guitar companies for many decades. Rosewood headplates look great when used with an Indian Rosewood fingerboard as well as other fingerboards such as ebony. These headplates (headstock veneers) are cut from the finest rosewood, they are dry and ready to use. Grading is based purely on aesthetic considerations. The first grade timber has a darker, more even colour and is generally more quartersawn with straighter grain. The second grade can be lighter coloured with some streaking and occasionally pinholes or small knots. Some luthiers prefer the look of the second grade as it has more character. Indian Rosewood (Dalbergia latifolia) is one of the most popular timbers used in guitars and basses. It is a popular choice for the the back and sides of acoustic and classical guitars and for the fingerboards, bridges and headplates of all types of instruments.

Quality – While other rosewoods have decreased in quality due to dwindling supply, Indian Rosewood is still available in fine quality quartersawn sets which are stable, easy to use, look great, and aren’t likely to crack.

Look – The wood is mostly dark brown, though the colours can range from mauve to nearly black. An Indian Rosewood back and sides contrasts well with a light coloured top or binding, making for a very tasteful looking instrument. Grain lines are generally straight, especially in the higher grades.



Sound – The sound quality of Indian Rosewood rates very highly. When it is used in the back and sides of an acoustic guitar it is known to give a clear bell like sound. This quality also influences the sound of an instrument when the wood is used for the fingerboard or bridge.

Price – Indian Rosewood is a premium timber for back and sides and is priced accordingly. Fingerboards and bridge blanks are slightly less expensive than African Ebony.

Availability/Renewability – Excellent quality Indian Rosewood is still available for all parts of musical instruments. The timber is now listed on the CITES list of protected species so there are restrictions on international transportation of commercial quantities of Indian Rosewood.Botanical name: Dalbergia latifolia

One of the first great alternatives to Brazilian Rosewood, East Indian Rosewood is versatile, powerful, and one of the most popular tonewoods of the past 40 years….?it has been the go-to choice for boutique builders and major manufacturers because it’s beautiful, extremely stable, and often much less expensive than more exotic rosewoods. Loved by flatpickers for its volume and booming low-end growl and by fingerpickers for its sparkling highs and distinct note separation, it can at times be precisely delicate and at others unapologetically thunderous.

East Indian Rosewood works equally well by hand or by machine and it bends quite comfortably. Although it’s slightly less dense than Brazilian Rosewood, it is generally more dimensionally stable and significantly less prone to cracking.?

East Indian Rosewood is visually stunning as well, with hues of chocolate brown commonly found alongside hints of gold, red and purple. The wood darkens with age, usually becoming a deep brown.
